Top apps for charity

(THRED)iPhone, iPadFree

Next time someone says gaming is a waste of time, point them towards the new (THRED) game, a joint project between Coca-Cola and (RED). All proceeds (using in-app purchases for things such as power-ups and extra lives) go towards The Global Fund’s HIV/AIDS programs in Africa. Specifically, it aims to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV by 2015.

GiveEasyiPhone, iPadFree

GiveEasy is one of the few Australia-centric charity apps. It simplifies the process of donating money by grouping several charities into a single portal. Supported organisations include The Smith Family, the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation and Variety. Donations can be made by credit card or through a nominated bank account, and there is a receipts section to make it easy to claim donations on your income tax return.

Track Your ImpactWeb appFree

Buying a Thankyou Water bottle (available at 7-Eleven stores and post offices) provides at least one month’s worth of clean drinking water to someone in need. Using the Track Your Impact web app (visit tracker.thankyouwater杭州夜网) in your mobile browser, you’ll be able to enter the unique bottle code on the label and see detailed information on the water project that your purchase will help fund.

If you haven’t yet heard of Kiva, it’s a non-profit organisation that lets you lend as little as $25 to entrepreneurs in developing countries. It doesn’t have an official mobile client, but iKiva is the best third-party one for the iPhone, letting you browse and find loans, add loans through the Kiva website, and check the status of your existing loans.

Apps for ActionAndroidFree

We love the thinking behind Apps for Action. Any apps and games you download through its portal (all of which are free) results in US25¢ being donated to your charity of choice. Sadly, only a handful of US charities are supported at the moment, with only three apps on offer at the time of writing.
